10 Things I Hate About You

Growing up with a sibling can be hard, especially when you’re not allowed to date unless they date, too.

When new high school student Cameron is introduced to the cliques at his new high school, he automatically sees Bianca, the girl of his dreams, and she in unattainable. Cameron isn’t the only one with eyes for her, and so to get her attention, he becomes her French tutor.

Bianca wants to date, but her strict father who is an OB/GYN doesn’t trust any boys to take his daughters out. However, he agrees that Bianca can date only if her older sister, Cat, starts dating too. The only problem is that Cat has a strong personality and is not interested in dating.

During one of her French study sessions, Bianca tells Cameron her dilemma, to which he tries to set Cat up with an intimidating guy named Patrick who might just be her match.

In one of the last 90s movies of the decade, 10 Things I Hate About You goes out in the style of Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew.” It’s a different generation of what high school was like, but not different enough that high schoolers of this generation couldn’t enjoy.

In this twisted tale of unrequited love, 10 Things I Hate About You covers the high school basics: bullies, teenage infatuation, wild parties and making a fool of yourself to win someone over. It’s funny, and the young cast is charming with Heath Ledger as bad boy, Patrick; high school new guy Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Cameron; naïve and lovable Larisa Oleynik as Bianca; and tough-as-nails but has a soft heart, Julia Stiles as Cat.

10 Things I Hate About You might be reminiscent of some viewer’s high school experience or it might just be entertainment for those who didn’t “do” the party/drama life. It is, though, a fun movie with a message not to judge someone too quickly because they act a certain way.
