What does it really take to be a soldier? Guts, and Steve Rogers has plenty of it.
A young, small-built man has tons of enthusiasm for joining the World War II effort, but because of his size and multiple health issues, he keeps being denied. Rogers’ (Evans) perseverance is eventually rewarded when a doctor sees something special in him. A super drug has been created to boost an ordinary man into a super soldier with enhanced speed, better resistance to heavy blows, and strong. What makes him the right candidate is that Rogers isn’t just interested in winning the war, but standing up to the bullies behind it.
Despite the war America think they’re fighting in, another group is rising to take over: Hydra. A German organization has harnessed the power of a foreign power source: a tesseract which gives his army a huge advantage. Rogers fights with the army to stop Hydra from bombing America.
Captain America: The First Avenger is one of the most important Marvel movies to pay attention to. Hydra is not just a threat back in the ’40s that was fought by Steve Rogers. Hydra continued to be a threat in the later movies, which took down S.H.I.E.L.D. (and was further explored in the TV series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.). For Rogers, fighting Hydra is personal.
This Marvel movie explodes with patriotism, being that the theme is World War II and the superhero is Captain America. Rogers encompasses American pride as he does his duty to fight for his country. Compared to most movies about the war we’ve been fighting in the last decade, Captain America is a good reminder of the unity Americans shared. Where is the blatant propaganda that America is the best? The short films shown before movies encouraging Americans to support the soldiers fighting overseas?
Captain America is full of action from start to finish. It’s a fun, feel-good movie where we’re all rooting for America to win. A bonus is that Rogers is a great role model. He stands up for what he believes in, has manners, and treats everyone with respect. The other Avengers are awesome at what they do but they just don’t have the same manners as Rogers.
As “the first Avenger”, Captain America sets up the buzz of excitement for the next Marvel movie which is The Avengers. This movie is full of fun, action, and surprises which is exactly how Marvel likes to make their movies.
